CLIPPED WINGS
Song by Rebecca Brinkley and Jim Skeel
Poem by Rebecca Brinkley
Clipped wings eventually grow back
Bloody stumps hide tiny buds
So small no one can see them
All we feel is pain, at the loss
The wounds are tender to the touch
We cry a lot and have to walk
While we heal in earthbound regions
Fretting about how high we could have flown
With those wings
Who cares about those wings?
We kid ourselves compulsively,
Watching for signs of new growth
Of those wings -- our lovely wings
The wounds are tender to the touch
We cry a lot and have to walk
While we heal in earthbound regions
Fretting about how high we could have flown
With those wings -- our lovely wings
Somehow we learn to live with the pain
By stepping forward into the next day,
Then into another, until we forget to look
At what was and what could have been
It is then we notice we are flying --
With those wings -- our lovely wings

Set Yourself Up
Song by Hafiza Sue Capehart and Jim Skeel
Words by Hafiza Sue Capehart
You set yourself up by giving power to the positive.
You set yourself up by giving power to the negative.
You set yourself up, how do you know what the difference is?
Repeat
Intuition; intrinsic rationale.
Mind and No Mind are incorporeal.
The breakthrough comes as you follow 'round the curve of the yin-yang.
The breakthrough comes as you follow 'round the curve of the yin-yang.
You set yourself up by giving power to the positive.
You set yourself up by giving power to the negative.
You set yourself up, how do you know what the difference is?
Repeat
Know no limits of the two extremes.
Balance wisdom between the two extremes.
The fine line is the space around the dot of the yin-yang.
The fine line is the space around the dot of the yin-yang.

PULSING
Song by Jim Skeel and Hafiza Sue Capehart
Words by Jim Skeel
Sometimes you find life
Sometimes it finds you
Once in a while you can do without
If you open your heart you can feel
Yes I can feel
The pulsing of life
But what good is it
If not given a chance?
What matters is the warmth
Warmth only love can bring
Without it there is no chance
For a life that starts pulsing
Yes that is life
But without the love
It's better not to start?
The pulsing of life
A new life is not an accident
It takes a willful act
Think before you start it
About a new life pulsing
Yes I can feel
The pulsing of life
But what good is it
If not given a chance? to Survive.
Sometimes you find life
Sometimes it finds you
Once in a while you can do without
If you open your heart you can feel

Clenched Fist
For Marsha
Song by Hafiza Sue Capehart and Jim Skeel
Words by Hafiza Sue Capehart
Clenched fists and gnashing teeth.
Pounding my feet.
One foot in front of the other, on and on.
The long dark tunnel leads me on and on.
The pounding in my head’s the only heartbeat I know.
No way to get lost here.
There’s nowhere to turn.
I suppose what’s before me is what’s behind me.
No reason to see, no reason to feel.
For the walls of this place are as cold and hard as I feel.
Open your eyes. Come into the light.
Put one foot in front of the other, on and on.
Now, I don’t care that I don’t care that I’m going nowhere.
One foot in front of the other, on and on.
The skin on my body has turned to stone now.
My heart started pounding and I’m scared ‘cause I’m all alone.
I turn to get free
But the stone pierces through me.
The pain is burning as it trickles down my arm.
Oh heart, now I feel you and I see how you bleed.
And I’m thinking all I want is to try and get out of here.
Open your eyes. Come into the light.
Put one foot in front of the other, on and on.
Come take my hand. Reach out where you stand.
Put one foot in front of the other, on and on.
I've been here all along, now come walk in the sun.
Put one foot in front of the other, on and on.

Ritual of Forgetting
Song by Jim Skeel and Hafiza Sue Capehart
Words by Jim Skeel
The sins of the fathers
Come to haunt other men
With Ritual of Forgetting
We can always cleanse their minds
But do we want to forget?
Or, do we want to forgive?
Do we need retribution?
Or a new world to live in?
It really doesn't matter
From Sarajevo to LA
Ritual of Forgetting
discriminates that way

Hell’s Casino
Song by Hafiza Sue Capehart and Jim Skeel
Words by Hafiza Sue Capehart
This is not mutual agreement.
This is like a bargain with the devil.
This is not a win-win situation.
Chances are you have no soul to save yourself.
You gambled with my life.
You stacked your bet against me.
But the odds are in my favor.
And the roulette wheel is turning…
This is not mutual agreement.
This is like a bargain with the devil.
This is not a win-win situation.
Chances are you have no soul to save yourself.
You dare to play at Hell’s Casino.
Play to win eternal life or death.
You didn’t think I’d call your bluff,
But there’s one more card to deal…
This is not mutual agreement.
This is like a bargain with the devil.
This is not a win-win situation.
Chances are you have no soul to save yourself.
Thou shalt not take the Dealer’s name in vain.
You didn't think I’d call your bluff,
But there’s one more card.

Fascism
Song by Jim Skeel and Hafiza Sue Capehart
Words by Jim Skeel
In this half light, life is indiscreet
But that's OK, you're OK, I'm OK
In this half light, decisions can be made
Still the wrong things seem to happen
But that's OK, you're OK
In this half light, you can make the laws
Still you cannot change their minds
You can only put them in jail

Breakdown
Inspired by the book: The Origin Of Consciousness In The Breakdown Of The Bicameral Mind by Julian Jaynes
Song by Jim Skeel and Hafiza Sue Capehart
Words by Jim Skeel
Is it true, long ago, gods spoke to everyone?
People walk around and heard the sounds
And even saw them in the mists
Can it be that their gods were carried inside their heads?
Shouting out to help them out
And even speaking voices of the dead
No more voices speak to us
They fade into the dimming past
And those who hear the voices now
Are locked up or are turned away
When the muses sing to us no more
and the oracles refuse to speak
In truth we lose touch with the divine
In the breakdown of bicameral minds
With the breakdown came Prophets and Popes
religious cruel and kind
Even now there may be places to seek
Places where the voices still speak
Place of awesome surround sight and sound
Where only wind surf and space confound
The mind thirsts for gods, living gods
Has consciousness drown them out?
No more voices speak to us
They fade into the dimming past
And those who hear the voices now
Are locked up or are turned away
When the muses sing to us no more
and the oracles refuse to speak
In truth we lose touch with the divine
In the breakdown of bicameral minds

Before And After

Before and After
Inspired by the poem Before and After by Yunus Emre, 1238 – 1320
Song by Hafiza Sue Capehart and Jim Skeel
Words by Hafiza Sue Capehart
Poem from the book, The Drop That Became The Sea, translated by Kabir Helminski and Refik Algan, Threshold Books.
I am before and I am after.
I am before and I am after.
I am the life of many lives.
I am the life of many lives.
I am the Guide when she appears.
I am the Guide when she appears.
To all of those who have lost their way
I am the faith of lovers.
I made the fields and built the mountains.
I put the skies above you.
The blind do not need eyes to see me.
The blind do not need eyes to see me.
I am the One who causes being.
I am the One who causes being.
When I hide within a heart,
I am Islam, I am blasphemy.
The One who gives life and gives order
The One who wrote the four books
Putting black marks on sheets of paper
The fabric of the Koran
Friend and Creator, I am the Gardener.
Friend and Creator, I am the Gardener.
This is not Yunus singing,
But his very Self.
Not to believe would be blasphemy.
The First, the Last, the Present.

Trust
For Rebecca
Song by Jim Skeel and Hafiza Sue Capehart
Words by Jim Skeel
Happiness or anger
Anger in love
Life sweet and simple is not enough
Even as we think to work the words around
We use them for the other not enough
A stones throw
A ripple in a pond
Anger recedes with your trust
Even as I think I love you so much
Forever I think I'll love you

Comfort
Song by Hafiza Sue Capehart and Jim Skeel
Words by Hafiza Sue Capehart
Can you find comfort in the darkness of the unknown?
Do you find conflict with the likeness of your image?
Repeat
Sometimes the beasts in the mirror come to show me who I am.
Sometimes medieval faces come to tell me where I’ve been.
Where have I been?
Can you find comfort in the darkness of the unknown?
Do you find conflict with the likeness of your image?
Repeat
I recognize you from seven thousand years ago.
Would you still let me know you seven thousand years from now?
Would you let me know you now?
Can you find comfort in the darkness of the unknown?
Do you find conflict with the likeness of your image?
Repeat
I wear a clouded mirror for protection from myself.
Would you still take the time to try to see through my reflection?
Would you try, try to find out throughout time?

Wise Guys
Inspired by the book: Genius in the Shadows
By William Lanouette with Bela Silard
Song By Jim Skeel and Hafiza Sue Capehart
Words By Jim Skeel
Hello World, yes you're still here
another day to ponder the meaning of it all
You know you have to wonder
How we made it through all these years
Still scratching and biting
Since Leo dreamed the bomb
Sticks and stones can break our bones
But to kill was harder still, we invented bows and arrows
The Chinese then made gunpowder
Soon came the rifle and cannon
Yeah, we were civilized!
Alfred Nobel thought he had ended all war
With the substance called dynamite
Instead we got the great Patriotic War
Crushing the losers into submission
Einstein, Teller, Leo Szilard
Talked themselves into playing the nuclear card
Later Einstein said ancient Chinese were right
A wise man takes no action at all
So out of the ashes comes Commies and Fascists
Hitler scaring poor Leo out of his wits
He talked Albert into writing the letter they'd soon regret
then FDR he carried the torch
I'm sure I don't have to tell you about the outcome of this decision
About Japan, Oppenheimer or General Groves
And Alfred Nobel created a peace prize in his own honor
From the profits he made from it all
Einstein, Teller, Leo Szilard
Talked themselves into playing the nuclear card
Later Einstein said ancient Chinese were right
A wise man takes no action at all
As Albert said; it's impossible to foresee the results of what you do
Now Pandora's box is open and the Genie won't go back in
We build up all the arsenals until it was overload
Poisoning our only planet
Einstein, Teller, Leo Szilard
Talked themselves into playing the nuclear card
Later Einstein said ancient Chinese were right
A wise man takes no action at all

Amnesiacs
Inspired by the book: The Critical Path
By R. Buckminster Fuller,
Song by Hafiza Sue Capehart and Jim Skeel
Words by Hafiza Sue Capehart
Amnesiac cartographers lost their way off the edge of the world.
Tying the knot, day by day
Guessing, to keep the beat at 22 degrees
Working to windward
Working to windward
Amnesiac astronomers clock the sun as it circles the planet.
Setting the stones, day by day
Guessing, to keep the beat at 22 degrees
Working to windward
Working to windward
Charting the way with traces of meridians
That were once engraved in their minds.
Repeat 3x.
Amnesiac executives keep their love beads in a cedar hope chest.
Knotting their ties, day by day
Guessing, to keep the beat at 22 degrees
Working to windward
Working to windward
You loop around and pull through,
Loop around and pull through.
Pull it tight, pull it tight.
